I explore the process of evolution by natural selection using observations and experiments to test evolutionary theory in natural populations.
My research addresses two main themes:
1. Guppy Experimental Evolution
I study evolution as a contemporary process with experiments done in nature. I successfully tested aspects of the theory of evolution, as applied to life histories, and characterized evolution as a sufficiently fast process to be detectable within a few years. Now, I am studying rapid evolution.

2. Evolution of the Placenta
I study the evolution of placentas in the fish family Poeciliidae, which has lead me to the study of intergenomic conflict and the inter-relationships among the evolution of placentas, sexually selected traits, pre- and post-copulatory reproductive isolation and how they all combine to govern the rate of speciation.
